Website Evaluation - Checking for Bias |
Free |
Being able to spot for bias is a valuable skill to learn if you are wanting to be an effective Internet researcher. Unfortunately, it isn't the most appealing of lesson objectives to teach - not least for the fact there are few resources out there which are appropriate for use in a primary classroom.
Luckily, however, if you happen to be studying the: Romans, Tudors, Victorians or WW2 there is fantastic website called Headline History available which contains some fantastic, imaginary (but still realistic) interviews with a range of people during each of the historical periods, all of whom have contrasting viewpoints on different events/situations which are perfect for scrutinising for bias

Website Evaluation - Cross Referencing Websites |
Free |
As well as teaching the children how to enter suitable search terms into an Internet search engine (I encourage them to use 2 or 3 key words) and how to only click on hits thatlook useful (by examining their: title, blurb and author, for instance), I also think that it's important to teach them the value of cross-referencing information found on different websites to help check the likelihood of its validity/accuracy. |
