Movie editing - create a video advertising the school |
Free |
A few weeks ago I was challenged by my deputy head to create a video advertising the school that included each child saying a different word - the idea being that it would showcase how our children are aged from 4 to 11 years old but still all feel part of the same whole school community. |

Making a silent movie |
Brilliant post from Simon showing in a lot of detail how he came up with the concept of doing a silent movie with his class. He goes through what happened in each of the 5 lessons used for the project and also includes some examples of the finished project. |

Song Lyrics as poetry
Watching the new Virgin Media advert last night in whcih the voice over reads the lyrics to Madness’ ‘Our House’ as if it were poetry made me think that it could be a good idea for a speaking and listening task. Children could be given lyrics to a song and asked to perform them in a style similar to the advert.

Friday's Film Feature
Last night I read an article about the film ‘Tron: Legacy‘ which is a remake of the 1982 film Tron.Tron was a film produced by Disney and is important in the history of cinema because it was one of the first films to rely heavily on computer-generated effects. In fact the film was not considered for an Oscar because it was felt that relying heavily on computers to make the film was somehow cheating. You can see the trailers for the original and remake below. Have a look at how the effects have changed and improved over time. Nowadays almost every film you see at the cinema has been made with the help of computers.

Friday's Film Feature
However, before computers were able to create the fantastical worlds of Harry Potter, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings film-makers had to rely on other techniques to bring fantasy to life on screen. If a modern film required dinosaurs or monsters then computers would be used to design and animate them but before computers were powerful enough to achieve this the animators would have used models and painstakingly moved them bit-by-bit to build up the illusion of movement.
Ray Harryhausen was one of the leading figures in film animation and created some of the most memorable monster sequences in cinema history. I particularly remember watching Jason and the Argonauts when I was very young. The film was made in 1963 and includes a very famous scene with some skeleton warriors that gave me nightmares when I was 6. Every time I have seen CGI skeletons since they have never seemed as good as Ray Harryhausen’s. Take a look at the clip below and see what you think.
